I do trade morning momo stocks, but I do avoid risk – so often I avoid the first 30 minutes (gap and go) and trade momentum stocks later in the day after the wash-out looking for a snap-back. These are not useful for first 30 minute market open gap and go type plays (you need a good momentum scanner, level 2, and best to have hot-keys for the first 30 mins of gap and go trading)… but are very useful for intra day scalping and swing trading (start with trending stocks and then look at indicators intra for simple set-ups – study scan study scan study scan).

Current Holds / Trading Plan:

All small to mid size holds in this order according to sizing – $ONTX, $DUST, $USRM, $XOM, $NE, $ASM, $SSH, $LGCY, $TRCH, $ESEA, $MGTI.

Per recent’ $DUST I will close for a loss if Gold holds 1260 – sucks, but it was a relatively small position (to portfolio size) but I didn’t follow the golden rule… when a trade goes against your plan cut fast and I didn’t so I will likely pay the price. And I guess what has become the second golden rule… listen to the algos… they haven’t been wrong yet – so yes, I didn’t listen to my own invention ROSIE the Gold Algo (give Rosie a little plug there she deserves it lol). Embarrassing, especially because ROSIE nailed the bottom many weeks in advance of the bottom – all I had to do was listen and boom new house. Sad.

It’s a good idea to refresh your chart outlook and keep it simple sometimes!

Current Holds / Trading Plan:

$JDST, $VRX, $ASM, $SSH, $LGCY, $TRCH, $ESEA, $CBMX, $JUNO (all very small), $DUST (looking for a way out on $DUST – was expecting one final significant spike in USDJPY before drop). $CBMX and $JUNO are holds till spring if necessary (you would have to do your own DD on the companies and make your own determination).

Oil, Gold and the VIX are high on my watch list. 

General Market Outlook:

US Dollar Index $DXY got a kick up as expected but Trump and Abe have an announcement today at 1:00. The Gold trade is holding up well considering IMO. Oil chart has repaired itself magically and it is near important resistance – with OPEC meetings I would use caution. $SPY got a kick up as expected and targets are being hit there now by our $SPY algorithm chart modeling. $VIX is dead as expected but I am watching. And Silver I see similar to Gold but a tad stronger mid term.

All very small positions – $ROKA, $TRCH, $ESEA, $CBMX, $JUNO, $DUST (looking for a way out on $DUST – was expecting one final significant spike in USDJPY before drop). $CBMX and $JUNO are holds till spring if necessary (you would have to do your own DD on the companies and make your own determination).

General Market Outlook:

Looks like Gold is trying to get up off the mat – yet to be confirmed. $DXY and $USDJPY still wildcard. $VIX is getting crushed to lows as I expected. $SPY got lift as expected. $GDX surprisingly resilient – careful, if market gets idea that Trump not going to help miner’s like market thinks whoompf.

Rosie the Gold Algo, EPIC the Oil Algo and the others couldn’t be more dialed in so that’s fantastic.

Per yesterday;

This could be start of turn in many areas. Looks like some bio runner momos and Gold, Silver and other metals active and close to test. $SPY rangebound but with earnings we could go here. $DXY could be at interim support.

Per previous;

My general bias (as a trader – not algo math) is for the market to be somewhat flat or deflate prior to Jan 20 inauguration, Gold and Silver to get further lift but back off between Wednesday afternoon and Monday. After the inauguration my bias is toward Gold and Silver getting punished when the Trump train gets moving again (no telling if this will be days or weeks or even a few short months). But I do think Trump will crush Gold, Silver etc and the $VIX at some point. The $VIX I will be watching close. Oil I think has headwinds. Natural Gas I am continuing to watch. Smaller Gold / Silver / Oil companies and Shippers / Greece I am watching very close also. But of course with Brexit in the news, the OPEC situation and inauguration I am going to stay very nimble and likely trade volatility and Gold related most of the week.

Early in 2017 I will be watching very closely bonds, $USDJPY, markets in general for direction (of course there are hundreds of variables).

Metals, energy and financials are three areas I am looking to for 2017 for trading margin – with bio in fourth place on my list. And per previous we’re expecting some action in bonds to the upside a high probability.

As a trader, it is the margin / volatility I am focused toward and getting on the right side of a market / sector turn and scaling in to that.

All algos (Oil, SPY, Gold, Silver, Dollar, VIX) have hit their targets now (long term since July and short term) so we are running calculation targets for all six algos for all time charting time-frames and expect these reports to start rolling out first week of January 2017.

I do trade morning momo stocks, but I do avoid risk – so often I avoid the first 30 minutes (gap and go) and trade momentum stocks later in the day after the wash-out looking for a snap-back. Just prior to open and shortly after open I post momentum stocks to the trade chat room (and Twitter and Stocktwits if I have time).

Two-Week Stock Trading Challenge: Day 3 Chart Review, $BIOC $URRE $TVIX $FFHL $TCCO

Welcome to the third day’s review of our two-week trading challenge, where our lead trader’s aim is to double his large account. Our lead trader’s record for January 11 was 2 wins, 2 losses, and 2 holds.

The first loss of the day was during a morning momentum play. Entry was a bit too late, going long at 3.16, 1000 shares on $BIOC (9:36 AM). Exit was four minutes later, at 2.95 for 1000 shares.

The first win of the day came from $URRE in the morning, going long for 1000 shares at 3.13 (9:56 AM), and adding another block at 10:19 AM at 3.05, 1000 more shares. This position was held for 22 minutes, and all 2000 shares were sold for 3.33 at 10:41 AM.

There was another set of block adds, the first at 10:57 AM for 3000 shares at 3.86, and then another 6000 for 3.38 at 12:10 PM. This set of 9000 shares entered an overnight hold position, given by the light blue arrow in the image below.

The second loss of the day was a volatility play in $TVIX. The lead trader entered in after lunch for 1000 shares at 7.07 (1:17 PM) and was out at 2:12 PM at 6.89.

The second win of today was a hold for 7000 shares in $FFH, where blocks of 1000 shares each were scaled in between 2:52 PM and 2:54 PM, with a final add for 5000 shares at 2:54 PM. By 3:10 PM, our lead trader scaled out the entire set of 7000 shares for 4.10.

There last overnight hold for today came right before end-of-day, with 1000 shares scaled in between 3:38 PM and 3:54 PM on $TCCO.

General market sentiment for January 11 was not as promising as the previous day, where many of our lead trader’s profits came from a series of intraday scalps. As such, no video recap was captured.
