Room Settings: We are testing fault settings for multiple trading rooms in 2017 (main room, momentum, options, swing, commodities, etc). We can have groups in different rooms all seeing same screen and announcements / broadcast – if you’re moved don’t sweat it – it won’t affect your experience.

Overview Perspective & Review of Chat Room, Algo Calls, Trades and Alerts:

$GALE I nailed with morning momentum with an add – wish the entries were larger – then I gave a lot of that back to the market with a botched $UWT trade. $UWT entry was fine – my exit was poor at pit close in the down I held – a no no trading oil related unless you are trading with a conviction to hold in the uptrend (as oil is trading now). But I was concerned with the uptrend because we were close to resistance and a previous high and my plan was a tight trade but I didn’t execute a tight departure. So that was a mistake. You can always re-enter. Cut quick.

Members in our room did well with $KATE and a few other plays. I was on top of $KATE just preoccupied so didn’t take a trade. Mathew was on top of $GDX miners, bonds, $TLT, and various other plays. Fairly active room considering market. Great team.

Looking Forward:

I need to exit $DUST and entered it and held because I was convinced USD/JPY would at minimum do a major spike up to end the rally – but not so lucky. $CBMX and $JUNO are holds in to spring if necessary – that was the plan anyway.

We are looking to volatility, bonds, metals and possibly bio at this point short / mid term – but the market will let us know.

The market has a tonne of inflection points now, Silver Gold and Miner’s woke up some today so things should get interesting soon with our algos that you can find here:

Today was very calm. Some trades in the group. For me quiet – study day. We had rotation in to small bio pharma that I missed, some movement in small cap metal equities and the likes of $NVDA, $TSLA, $NFLX in action.

Personal Trades / Lessons:

No trades. I did miss the oil move (and if you know me at all you know that is rare) but the action was not typical oil trade action. I have become so tuned in to the oil trade (easily with a 95% win rate specific to oil related trades) that when oil is trading “off” its normal pattern I can miss a move like today. The holiday I am convinced is responsible for it trading outside of its normal algorithmic model. As a trade (with-out the algo) I should have caught the move though.

We did see some movement in $GDX and $GLD and some of the small caps so those are on high watch with me for tomorrow.

Today was very calm. Some trades in the group. For me quiet – study day mostly. We were on top of every move though and there were some big plays and nice wins I discovered when talking to members later in day after market close.

My Personal Trades:

I took a long swing position in $DUST (1000 shares) – watching $USDJPY very close. Looking at inflection in many other areas (with reference to our algos). Called the natural gas move but didn’t take the recent trade opportunities. Momentum stocks weren’t acting well for my trading style. Looked at possible oil related trades $UWT $DWT but didn’t trigger. Holding $CBMX, $JUNO, $DUST. EPIC the Oil Algo 10:30 AM target missed by 5 cents – called two weeks ago:) Green arrow is when I entered $UWT, red arrow my exit and white arrow was today’s algo target at 10:30 AM.

Mellow day – market calm – nailed a runner in morning $XGTI and still holding deep dive crude related $UWT from last week. $SGY is rocking from my Trading Room Newsletter alerts and Swing Trading set-up newsletters.

My Personal Trades:

Monday for me was mostly $STUDY and watching my Oil related $UWT trade – I am 10,000 shares deep from earlier in the week (1000, 3000, 6000 entries) – so that is setting up to be a great win. I see oil is up big overnight – would have never known:) Other traders in the room have been on winning side and have been regularly so that is great. Still hold $CBMX and $JUNO.

Primary Lessons That May Help You With Your Trades:

The $UWT (crude oil trade) I am in is completely about trusting the proven algorithm @EPICtheAlgo (which took me about 6 months to fully trust). I would be a lot further ahead has I just trusted the math process earlier. But I did this time – and I WENT BIG – REAL BIG FOR ME.

Looking Forward:

The market has a tonne of inflection points now so things should get interesting soon with our algos (Oil, Gold, Silver, US Dollar, VIX, SPY).

The Art of the Lotto – Options Trading

So you want to trade options? You want to get rich quick? You want to be like that guy from Wolf of Wall Street(not Leo, every man wants to be Leo already). If you’ve answered yes to all three of these questions you’ve undoubtedly dabbled (or at least wanted to dabble) in cheap weekly options. There is no quicker way to make or lose a fortune than in high risk/high reward option plays. Below we are going to breakdown when these might be the right choice, and how to play them without blowing up your account.

Here are 4 “lotto options truths” to keep in mind before we dive in:

First off, I don’t recommend playing these on every position, and if you do I would suggest not building yourself a portfolio full of them. While it is fun logging in to your account and seeing a 50% increase, I can assure you the opposite is not quite so fun.
Secondly, these are typically always going to be front week plays or at most following week. What does this mean? This means that you need your move and you need it now. If there is a delay, the theta burn with eat your position alive.
Thirdly, only risk what you are willing to lose. With the high theta burn and large gamma risk, if you get choppy price action or price action moving against your position, they will become doughnuts in the blink of an eye.
Lastly, if the terms “Delta”, “Gamma”, “Theta”, or “Vega” are literally Greek to you, I would suggest doing a bit of studying on the mechanics of options before diving in head first. These are important terms when understanding how an option is prices, and how it will act in comparison to the underlying asset. I can do a basic review in the future, so shoot me a note if that would be worthwhile.

So if I am looking to play a high risk option, how do I go about it? These are going to be quick plays, so MOMO, snap backs, or playing stocks for a bounce all would be decent set ups. I typically don’t play lotto’s for earnings as they don’t offer great risk/reward in my opinion. These setups are the same whether option or common stock, but with lotto type options you can’t afford to be wrong or late. The above mentioned theta risk is inflated in lotto type plays, and this is only exacerbated by the fact that these will always start OTM or out of the money. You don’t necessarily need to get ITM or in the money to profit, but if you go the wrong way you have no safety net of any real intrinsic value attached.

After I’ve identified a stock and an expected move, you then have to take a look at the options grid and see how the different options are being priced, and what might make sense. Typically, I am looking for something with a high delta, at a realistic strike. The higher delta means that for movement in your predicted direction, you will get paid more. For example: if a call option has a delta of 1.00(sometimes noted as 100), for every $1 increase in the underlying stock, the call option will increase by $1.00 all else being equal. The other Greeks also come in to play here like gamma which will affect the rate of change in the delta, but you get the idea. So when looking at a lotto call for example, I want a high delta. Why? Because I want to get paid. These are high risk high reward remember, so if I get my move I want to get the payoff. A large majority of these will expire worthless so the winners need to win big for you. This is also where I define my risk. When you’re buying lotto plays, the chances of salvaging much of your buy in can often be low, so I will only buy what I am willing to lose outright. This helps not only curb large losses, but it also helps me manage my positions without large emotional swings. Manage your risk up front the best you can and it will go a long way towards success.

Let’s use an example from the room this week. I wanted to play $CHK for a bounce, but wasn’t too confident that I would get my move with some pending market weakness and overall choppy markets. I knew if it did bounce, it should have some legs as it recently came down hard from a swing high(good), but it had yet to break out of the bull flag pattern that I had it in(not so good). I could have waited for it to break out to the upside, but positive price movement and strength in oil lead to jumping on it now instead of waiting. If I would have waited for it to break out to the upside, I would have also likely had to move up at least a strike to get a similar set up which meant going to 8’s, and that didn’t leave me with much upside against the prior swing high of $8.20.

They don’t call them lotto’s for nothing after all! So with $CHK trading at 7.03 and 8 days to expiry or DTE, I picked up a handful of the Dec 23 7.5 calls for .11 each. You will note the large delta and gamma which means that these options will explode with positive price movement. Yes, they will also bleed out if I don’t get my move. You will also notice the small price tag attached to each contract. If these got to zero tomorrow I won’t be elated, but I won’t lose any sleep over the loss either.

Here’s what I ended up with, and you can see what I mean by keeping size small on a play like this. This was as of close on 12/15.

Here is the same position, only one day later. The interesting move, and why our position is now worth less lies in the Theta. Above we had a large theta of -16.11, and now the theta is -14.57. This is the time value, and what is working against you with short duration options. Remember my saying that you need your move and you need it now? We got a 2% move in the underlying asset, and lost money day over day because of the Theta decay. Let’s also look at the Delta which increased for two reasons. The main reason that Delta increased is that the underlying asset moved in our favor, but the Vega also moved slightly which will increase the Delta as well. This also brought the Gamma along with it and we saw a large increase there. If the underlying asset would have stayed flat day over day, we could have expected a lower Delta as the time decay would have brought it down as remember that as expiry all out of the money options have a Delta of zero.

As of now we are about even on the position, and all of the same rules apply moving forward. My typical goal for these lotto’s is to sell half of my position for a double, and let the other half “ride free” so to speak. This not only covers your costs for the initial purchase, but it also takes the pressure off and lets you manage the position knowing that you have already made your money back. I will do another post next weekend detailing how this ended up, and if $CHK brought me a present or a lump of coal for Christmas.

So that again leaves our inaugural algo EPIC!

From yesterday:

Epic the Oil Algo calls price and time for every Tuesday at 4:30, Wednesday at 10:30 and Friday at 1:00 (and much more than those calls) the week prior in his newsletter oil reports the week prior so that traders can plan their trades etc. Anyway… the Tuesday at 4:30 price and time target zone was hit yet once again! He’s firing at 93.3% call win rate (all published in advance like all over our algos).

And what do you know! Wednesday EPIC the Oil Algo HIT THE PRICE PREDICT TARGET TO THE EXACT CENT AT THE EXACT SECOND OF THE PREDICTION NINE DAYS PRIOR!

So were weren’t sure which target was going to hit – funny thing is primary target hit right to the cent at the second of the call and the secondary target hit about 2 seconds later right to the exact cent also. What a day for EPIC. Below is a shot of when price was on its way to targets and above is price of crude hitting both called targets within seconds of each other.

My Personal Trades:

I only added to my long position in my swing account on $UWT and held overnight. There was an awesome set up (our code word for it in the lab is “right ear sidewinder” AND WOW DID IT PLAY OUT EXACTLY AS WE SAID IT WOULD to the second all the way through the trade. I will try and find time to a do a detailed video in this set-up this weekend – we hit that trade set-up at least 95% of the time and the price spike is violent so it is an awesome crude oil instrument related trade. Normally I would have sold right at the top of the spike (because of course knowing where that is in advance is key). But I am loading crude oil related plays in my swing account right now. Mid term play. Anyway, it was recorded live in detail in the trading room so I hope to get a video done on it.

Here’s generally what the oil related trade looked like on a chart along with some tweets and you will see in the log below of me alerting of the set-up and when it was complete (the details are more important and that is why I need to do the video, that set-up can be used over and over with oil related trade on intra-day trading with near 100% accuracy).

03:44 pm Mathew Waterfall : Rolling half of my $ON jan 13’s to 14’s for .36 credit. Great way to take some profits and keep the trade on. This will move the effective cost of those 14’s to .16 a piece. Keeping the other half of the 13’s and will outright sell those in coming days
03:45 pm Mathew Waterfall : You could also sell against the 13’s to creat a spread if you wanted or straight sell to lock gains but I think this goes higher as my previously mentioned target is 14 if the market cooperates
